Shannon Cayer, Psy.D.

Shannon Cayer, Psy.D. (she/her) is a licensed clinical psychologist who graduated from Midwestern University in Glendale, AZ in 2019 with a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at Wasatch Behavioral Health’s APA- and APPIC-Accredited Health Service Psychology Internship Program, which brought her from AZ to Provo, UT in 2018. Prior to graduate school, she completed her undergraduate education at Arizona State University (go Sun Devils!).

Dr. Cayer has a robust history of training and working in community mental/behavioral health and with individuals who live with serious and persistent mental illness (SPMI). In as much, she is skilled at working with individuals who live with histories of abuse and subsequent traumatic stress, depression and other mood disorders, anxiety, personality disorders, and substance abuse. Dr. Cayer has been working part-time in private practice since 2019 and is a culturally responsive, LGBTQ+-affirmative psychotherapist.

In addition to private practice, Dr. Cayer works full-time at Wasatch Behavioral Health in a variety of roles, including as a therapist, testing psychologist, and Training Director for the APA- and APPIC-Accredited Health Service Psychology Internship Program she once graduated from. She provides quality care and training in all of her roles by remaining informed of current psychological research. Dr. Cayer prioritizes evidence-based treatments, including Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD, and Motivational Interviewing (MI) for instance. In addition, she remains up-to-date on best practices that promote diversity, equity, and inclusivity in both clinical and administrative settings.

Dr. Cayer is known as very social and outgoing. She enjoys nurturing her community of friends in Utah as well as her family, which consists of a partner of over 10 years, dogs, and a bearded dragon. Dr. Cayer and her partner enjoy Western US road trips, weekends in the local deserts and mountains, and hikes with their Border Collie/Corgi, Tiny. She is also a proud plant parent, caring for about 25 plants at any given time.
