Our Approaches to Therapy in Provo and Mapleton, UT

Mental health conditions, relationship difficulties, and life transitions affect people in different ways. At Mountain Ridge Behavioral Health Center, our therapists use a range of evidence-based approaches to therapy in Provo and Mapleton, Utah, to support emotional well-being, personal growth, and lasting change.

Evidence-Based & Trauma-Informed Care

Our clinicians use evidence-based psychotherapy and a trauma-informed approach that prioritizes safety, collaboration, and empowerment. Treatment is tailored to each client's needs, goals, and comfort level.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or tapping, while a client recalls a distressing memory. This approach helps individuals process traumatic experiences and reduce the emotional intensity of memories associated with trauma, PTSD, and anxiety.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is one of the most common approaches to therapy. It helps individuals identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to anxiety, depression, stress, and other mental health concerns.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Originally developed to treat borderline personality disorder, DBT teaches skills in emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness to help individuals manage intense emotions and maintain healthy relationships.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT helps individuals accept difficult thoughts and emotions while acting in alignment with their values rather than attempting to eliminate discomfort.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

IFS examines the parts of the mind that carry emotions, beliefs, and protective strategies that influence behavior and relationships. By exploring these parts, IFS fosters self-awareness and emotional healing.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Mindfulness techniques help individuals pay attention to thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations in the present moment. These skills can reduce stress, increase self-awareness, and support emotional regulation.

Exposure Therapy

In exposure therapy, individuals gradually confront fears in a structured environment. This approach is commonly used to treat specific phobias, OCD, panic disorder, and trauma.

Additional Therapeutic Approaches

Our therapists may also incorporate these approaches to therapy when appropriate:

  • The Gottman Method for couples counseling and conflict resolution.

  • Family therapy to improve communication and strengthen bonds.

  • Faith-based counseling that integrates spiritual beliefs into therapy when desired.
